Creating a clip map

The commands for creating a simple clip map can be found either via the Edit > Clip Map menu or via the Content control window in the Map context menu. For advanced users it is also possible to set clip map on individual map layers or even to set different clip maps.

The different ways to create clip maps

The following commands are available for creating a clip map:

Clip Map By List

Opens the dialog Clip map according to list.

In the list, select all areas that are to be included in the clip map. If the areas are hierarchically combined, you can select all areas of a subordinate hierarchy level with a single click on the area in the superior level. For example, you can select all 5-digit postal code areas of postal code region 53 with a single click on postal code 53 Bonn. You can also select all municipalities in the Rhein-Sieg district with a single click on this district and thus save yourself having to click on all municipalities in this district individually.

clip map for marked areas

With the command Marked areas you create a clip map according to the previously made selection in the map.

Freely define clip maps

With the command Free defined you can use the tools Rectangle, Circle or Free defined to define a section in the map which has nothing to do with the base areas.

clip maps in variable areas

Areas located in a territory level of a area organisation can be changed by allocations. After such a change, the question arises whether a clip map based on this area should be adapted to the new layout. Therefore, after creating a clip map on such a level, a dialog appears to define the behavior for this case.

Dynamic Adjustment

If the selected territories change, the geographical area of the clip map will also change.

Note: In contrast to setting up an clip display for the first time, the map section is not adapted after changes have been made to the area layout (the behaviour when setting up an clip display can be controlled via the global option Zoom by clip display, but in standard cases the map section is set to the clip display). Thus, the adjustment of the clip display is only visible if the changes are in the current map section.

  • To reset the map section to the entire area after changing the area section, use the command Fit all layers from the menu View.

Freeze

The clip map covers the current area of districts and is no longer adjusted.

In this case, the clip map will be set to the current area of the territory and will not be affected by future changes to the territory map.

Create different clip map

Different clip map may be necessary if you want to display individual layers outside the clip map or if you only want to see individual layers in clip display at all.

Commands for defining an clip map are available on 2 levels:

clip map (map...): Defines an clip map for the map and all contained layers. All layers for which no deviating clip map is defined adopt this clip map Changes are automatically passed on to the layers.

clip map (only [name of layer]): Allows you to define a different clip map for one or more levels within a map. This clip map is now independent of the map, so changes to the clip representation of the map have no effect on these different clip representations.

clip map like map

The entry like map shows you by a check mark whether the layer has a different clip representation from the map or not. If a different clip representation exists, you can delete it by executing this command. The layer then uses the clip map again.

clip map for objects within the map

Design elements such as geometric shapes or texts are normally inserted on the sheet and not in the map. However, these can be moved in the control window content from page to map.

Note: Via the properties of a map under Settings > Clip Map > Include other objects you can define how the clip display is to be applied to objects such as freehand texts or geometric forms within the map. If you set this property to yes , such objects will no longer be displayed outside the clip display.

Clear clip map

Via Clear Clip, you can clear the created clip map. Please note that the map must be marked for this. If a different clip map is cleared, this layer is completely visible, independent of the clip map.
